Spain and Morocco Agree Train Tunnel Link
Spain and Morocco have announced their joint commitment to link their two countries by building a train tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar. Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said he has "firmly decided" upon making the tunnel a reality, but demanded financial help from the European Union since it is an intercontinental project that would contribute to "growth, development and well-being" on both sides of the Mediterranean.
Flamenco Guitarist to be Decorated in Japan
A Spanish flamenco guitarist is to be decorated in Japan after he saved the life of a woman who jumped from a burning building.The fire broke out in the woman's home early on Sunday in Tokyo and the guitarist encouraged the woman to jump as the only way of surviving the blaze, and she landed safely in his arms in the street below.Antonio Solera, a guitarist with the Antonio Gades Company, was presented with the award at the Orchard Hall shortly their performance.
Prospective Mayor of Madrid Meets Ken Livingston in London
The Socialist Party's candidate for Mayor of Madrid was in London last week for a meeting with the Mayor, Ken Livingstone.Miguel Sebastian promised Mr Livingstone that he would work to bring the two cities closer together if he wins in the May local elections.
Telefonica to Sell Endemol Shares
Telefonica, Spain's telecoms company has confirmed it will sell its stake in Dutch TV firm Endemol, the producer of Big Brother. According to reports Telefonica wants to move away from its content producing business to concentrate on distribution.It distributes multimedia content to its mobile phone clients, and is involved in pay-TV in Spain and Latin America.There has been much speculation as to who will buy the 75% share, with private equity firms and Endemol's original co-founder John De Mol among the names linked to a bid.
Ryan Air Block Ticket Sales on Travel Agency Sites
Low cost airline, Ryan Air, has said it will block several tour operator websites from selling its flights at inflated prices. They say they have done so after they saw that some passengers were being charged extortionate mark ups and had been given misleading terms and conditions.
Conference on Water Problems to be Held in Spain
A Conference on Problems of Water Source Handling will take place in Zaragoza on 12th and 13th March.The event is expected to bring together over 200 government officials, civil society and business community representatives, as well as representatives of international and regional organizations. Water management is one of the priorities of the 2007 Spanish OSCE Chairmanship.
High Winds Cause Fires in MalagaProvince
The high winds which hit Malaga and many other provinces in Spain this week caused several fires.One fire, in the Sierra de Mijas, forced the closure of the road between Mijas and Benalmadena for a time. It was caused by the collapse of a high tension cable.A report from fire fighters says that 7% of the fires in Malaga province are caused by high tension cables.The large number of fires seen in the recent high winds has led the regional government to call on the Endesa power company to inspect their network.
New British Football Centre for Estepona
A number of top football clubs have come together to endorse a luxury residential and sport development outside Estepona called The Village at Valle Romano Golf and Resort. Several first division clubs including Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United, West Ham United and Celtic have been reported to be interested in the idea of creating a new exclusive development in the town. ‘The Village’ will have 1,100 homes, an 18 hole golf course, four tennis courts, a 5 star hotel, and three football pitches and is expected to be completed in 2009.

Two female cubs have been born in the zone of Coto del Rey in the DonanaNational Park.In this zone, improvements of habitat have taken place through the project Life granted to the Department of Environment. There is another female that the technical personnel of Donana's Biological research station think may have given birth, though they are not certain at present.
Alhaurin de la Torre Has Youngest Population
Alhaurin de la Torre has become with municipality with the youngest population in the province of Malaga according to figures from the Ayuntamiento and the latest report from the Andalucía Statistics Institute.The report shows that 26.5% of the population were under 20 years old in 2005 and the Ayuntamiento has confirmed that this figure has continued to increase.The population is currently 32,394 and of those there are 8,720 under 20s (27%).
Planned New Section of Road Between Casapalma and Zalea Crossroads Awarded
The extension of A-357 Guadalhorce road has taken a further step.The Department of Public Works of the Junta de Andalucia has awarded the planning of the project of the road between Casapalma and the Zalea crossing, which will be drafted by the company Apia XXI with a budget of 670,000 Euros.
The company will take charge of the works to improve the A-357 between the two points, a distance of 7.9 kilometres.The section of road in question carries approximately 15,000 vehicles a day and which, when the work is finished, will have a 7 metre wide carriageway, with two lanes of 3.5 metres in each direction and a central reservation of 7 metres width. The Junta did not report on how long the project would take to plan, although an interim period of 12 months was set.After the road works begin, it is expected to take 26 months to complete.
It is foreseen that this new section of road will require an investment of 36 million Euros that will be financed jointly by the program of Funds FEDER of the European Union.The Public Works Department indicated that the project will connect with Cerralba, Zalea, and the Pizarra-Alora road.
The Ayuntamiento of Alora has asked that the dual carriageway will extend further to the northern access road of Alora.
Mijas Rally
The Rally of Mijas will pass close to Alora today, Saturday 10th March.The start of stage 5 will be take place a kilometre past La Venta Los Conejitos in the direction of Carratraca. The first lap will be 2.45 pm and the second 5.15 pm.Segura-Garcia, Santisteban, Blanco, Ollero, Jimenez y Prado are among the top names in the first round of the Championship of Andalucia competition.
