Low-cost airlines are taking an increased share of passengers arriving in Spain and chipping away at the numbers of travellers using traditional carriers, according to a new government report.

The report by the Tourism Studies Institute, which is part of the Industry, Tourism and Commerce Ministry, said that Ryanair, EasyJet and Air Berlin accounted for 60% of traffic by low-cost carriers to Spain.   The study reports that the number of passengers flying with low-cost carriers to Spain grew last month by 29.1% compared with June, 2006, to 2.2 million, or 37.6% of the total.   At the same time, passenger numbers on traditional airlines dropped in June to 3.6 million, or 1.8% less than the same month a year ago.

Plague of Voles in Northern Spain

Farmers around Leon, north of Madrid, have demanded massive doses of poison to exterminate the rodents, but health experts and environmentalists warn that the cure might be worse than the disease, with poison threatening wildlife and posing a worse risk for humans than the dead voles.
