Spain Sets New Food Safety Laws
 
Spain has passed new food safety laws including measures to make food manufacturers explain claims that a certain food can benefit people on diets, the Health Ministry said this week.  "The law states that products which claim to complement low-calorie diets should say so on the label but only if companies can show sufficient scientific proof to justify the claim," the Ministry said in a statement.
The law says that any claim on labels must be understandable by the average consumer. The new legislation also includes measures to control the market in powdered baby milk and extensive controls on packaging quality.
 
Spanish National Energy Plan Approved
 
The Spanish government has approved the National Energy Plan which involves investment of 19 billion Euros over the next eight years shared between gas transportation and electricity production. This is in addition to the 8 billion announced last week for investment on infrastructure.
 
WWW Congress for Madrid Next Year
 
Madrid will become the capital of the internet in April 2009 when the International World Wide Web Congress is held there. The polytechnic university is organising the congress for the first time and 2000 experts from all over the world are expected to attend.
 
New Record for Guinness Book
 
In the event “Taste of Spain” promoted by the Spanish Tourism organisation 456 Sevillana dancers beat the world record for the highest number of these dancers in action. Regent Street in London was closed for the duration last Sunday afternoon and approximately 100,000 people attended.
 
No Transfer of Water to Barcelona?
 
The intense rainfall of the last few days has put the controversial transfer of water from the Ebro to Barcelona in doubt. Experts are analysing the new situation to see whether it will still be necessary. The disagreements between the national government and the state governments ofAragon and Barcelona over the matter may now be postponed until the next time.
 
No Water Cuts This Summer in Malaga
 
Local authorities say that although water levels are at their lowest for 13 years there is sufficient to get the province through the summer without recourse to cuts in supply. The last serious drought was in 1995 when reservoirs were at 70 cubic hectometres which led to cuts in supplies but the present level is 181, enough for a year.
 
Book Fair in Malaga
 
The annual book fair “La Feria del Libro” takes place in the Paseo del Parque in Malaga from May 30th to June 8th with a range of activities including book sales, presentations and signings throughout the event. There is also a similar event in Madrid next week, a reflection on the fact that the Spanish have recently become serious book readers. A survey reveals that almost 60% of Spanish say that they now read books regularly, whereas a few years ago book reading was the act of a privileged few.
 
New Andalucian Airline for Malaga
 
A new Andalucian airline, Andalus Lineas Aereas, was launched this week. The company will operate two aircraft for short and medium routes to North Africa and one for flights to the Carribean.
 
New Routes for Ryanair
 
The low cost airline Ryanair has announced a new link between Malaga and Glasgow starting October 27th. This means that they will soon operate twelve routes from Malaga including the new links to East Midlands (June 2nd) and Edinburgh (September 16th).
 
Cruises from Malaga
 
The leading cruise ship operator Pullmantur has scheduled five cruises to sail from Malaga in October on their flagship vessel “Empress”. The itineraries will be from Malaga to visit Gibraltar, Lisbon, Lanzarote, Agadir, Casablanca and return to Malaga. Tickets go on sale in the next two weeks and cost from 619 euros.
 
Blue Flags for 17 Beaches in Malaga Province
 
The Environment and Consumer organisation ADEAC has awarded blue flags to 17 beaches in Malaga province this year, an increase of 2 on last year. There are 2 in the capital, La Malagueta and El Dedo, 2 in Nerja, 5 in Fuengirola, 1 in Mijas, 2 in Marbella, 3 in Estepona, and 2 in Manilva.
 
Agricultural Show in Antequera
 
The Fourteenth annual agricultural show AGROGANT takes place this weekend until Sunday June 1st at the fairground in the Parque del Norte in Antequera. The fair will feature competitions for horses and goats and a photographic competition. Special buses are available for transport to and from the Plaza de Castilla at 20 minute intervals until 3.00 am.
 
El Torcal Visitor Centre
 
The much delayed visitor and interpretation centre at the well known beauty spot El Torcal near Antequera is now expected to be opened in October. It will feature a “Tunnel of Time”, which will contain three different areas telling the story of how the spectacular limestone massif was formed. The present facilities only consist of a shop and information point, although other services are planned to be operative by the end of October.
 
International Day of the Environment in Archidona
 
Celebrations to mark the Dia Internacional de Medio Ambiente will be held in Archidona from June 6th to 8th. Among the events will be a “crazy car” race, a workshop of clown make-up and various other competitions.
 
Feria de Turismo EUROAL in Torremolinos
 
This weekend sees the 3rd annual tourism fair, EUROAL, which celebrates European and South American links taking place in the Palacio de Congresos in Torremolinos. The fair will be attended by tourism promoters and organisations of many countries from both continents. Admission is free.
 
Dia del Pescaito in Torremolinos
 
Next Thursday June 5th sees the twenty first edition of the annual Dia del Pescaito (day of the little fish) in which approximately 60,000 rations of fried fish will be provided free to visitors to Torremolinos. Festivities will begin at 1.00 pm until 5.00 pm complete with various musical events.
 
Classic Car Club Meet in Eldorado
 
A Classic Car Club meeting will take place at the film studios for “Eldorado” at Cine Hotel near Coin next Saturday June 6th at 11 am. Participation costs 10 Euros and is open to all classic car owners; all proceeds will go to the cancer care charity Cudeca.
 
Simply Red in Marbella
 
The pop group “Simply Red” is to perform at the Hotel Puente Romano on July 30th. This will be their only appearance in Spain this year and tickets for a limited 2600 places are already on sale through the internet.
 
Fiestas in Alora
 
Two events take place in Alora district today Saturday May 31st:
The eleventh annual fiesta at El Chorro, with various features, music, etc starting at 1.00 pm;
 
The first Fiesta Banda de Cornetas y Tambores Virgen de los Dolores Coronada with a street parade through the town starting at 7.00 pm followed by various musical performances at the municipal swimming pool. Entry is free.
 
Football
 
Last week’s welcome 1-0 win for Malaga against Atletico Sevilla along with favourable results elsewhere sees them back in second place in La Liga 2. This week they face Cadiz in what’s considered a local derby at La Rosaleda kick off 6.30 pm Sunday June 1st.
