 Spanish PM Promises Reforms to Boost Economy

Later this week the Spanish government intends to pass a sweeping package of measures designed to boost the economy. The PM stated that the reforms, star project in its legislature, called Projecto de Economía Sostenible, will cover renewable energy, education and more modern public administration. Hmm, promising is one thing, but actually doing it.......?

EU Court Rules on Capital Gains Tax Payback

The EU Court has ruled that Spain has illegally overcharged non resident property owners Capital Gains Tax between 1997 and 2006. The ruling means that anyone who sold a property and paid the tax during that period may be entitled to a rebate, which could cost the country about €317 million.

EU Gives €53 Million to Improve Rural Economy

The EU has granted €53 million to stimulate the rural economy in parts of Spain. Madrid, Murcia, Cantabria, Navarra and Cataluña will be the main beneficiaries. The grants are intended to protect biodiversity, manage water resources, and fight against climate change.

New Car Sales Up in Spain

New car sales were up by 26% in October, the second consecutive monthly increase in Spain, a probable reaction to the government subsidy of up to €2000 to buy a new car. However, the increase has not been enough for Volkswagen, who have announced cuts in production for the Seat plant in Martorell, Cataluña.

Alcohol Reduces Heart Risks

Another study has confirmed the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption in reducing the risk of heart attacks. The investigation found that drinking alcohol every day reduces the risk of heart disease by up to 30%. We'll carry on boozing then!

Addition to Hojiblanca Group

Hojiblanca, the world's leading group of olive oil producers, has incorporated a group of producers from Montes Norte de Ciudad Real. The conglomerate, made up of producers in Córdoba, Málaga, Jaén and Sevilla provinces, also announced that it is increasing its business with China, and expects to sell 2,000 tons of its products there in 2010.

Internet Study Puts Málaga Hotels in Top Ten Cities

A survey analysing the opinions of 2.7 million Internet users about hotels in major European cities placed Málaga in the top ten.The city's hotels were rated at number 7, the highest Spanish city. The top rated city was Dresden, Germany, followed by Bruges in Belgium.

Málaga Leader of Fresh Fish Business in Spain

Málaga is the leading centre of the fresh fish business in Spain. This year, the turnover is likely to approach €50 million, 3.5% up on last year.

BA Doubles Flights to Málaga

British Airways have doubled the number of flights from London to Málaga.. There are now two flights per day from Heathrow, plus two from London City airport. The numbers of flights have also been increased to other Spanish cities.

Flamenco and Picasso

A series of events at the Picasso museum in Málaga explores the connection between flamenco and avant-guarde artists. The first is on November 27th, others are planned for December, February, March and April.

Abba on Ice

A version of the musical "Mamma Mia" on ice will take place next month in Málaga. The spectacular will be performed by acrobats from Circo del Sol and champion olympic skaters at el Palacio de los Deportes Martín Carpena from December 17th to 20th.

Oases on the Beach

Beaches in Benalmádena are being improved by the addition of oasis style zones. Various areas on Playas Santa Ana and Las Gaviotas are having rockeries and mature palm trees added to enhance the appearance of the beaches. Work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Marbella to Have English Speaking University

A new English speaking university is to open in Marbella in February 2010. The facility, which will be the first and only one in southern Spain, will offer 3 year and 1 year courses in a wide range of subjects.

New High Adherence Surface for Álora Road

The road from Los Caballos restaurant to Barriada El Puente in Álora is to have a new high adherence surface to help reduce accidents. The composition to be used consists of bitumen and resin, with gravel made from calcined bauxite obtained by heating at temperatures up to 1500 degrees C. We're not just pretty faces here, you get a technical education, too!

XVIII Campo a Través "Ciudad deAlora" takes place in the Barriada del Puente in Álora on Sunday November 29th.

Fiesta del Mosto Atajate

The village of Atajate celebrates its annual wine festival on November 28th, with tastings, sales etc.

Christmas Retail Outlet Fair in Marbella

Next weekend, November 28th and 29th, there will be a Christmas retail outlet event at the Palacio de Ferias in Marbella.

Cross Country Championships 2011

The town of Punta Umbria in Andalucía has been chosen to host the world Cross Country championships in 2011.

Football

Málaga managed another 1-1 draw against Zaragoza at the weekend, after a fractious game with two red cards, and umpteen yellows. Next week, the opposition is 3rd placed Sevilla, away, on Saturday, November 28th at 10.00 pm, match live on La Sexta TV. Not much hope of points there, then!
