Last week, Spain was elected to the Human Rights Council of the UN for the first time. The council is the main international monitor of human rights throughout the world.
Spanish Police Chief in Venezuela
The Spanish chief of police has gone to Venezuela to engage in the fight against terrorism in the two countries. Apparently, it has been found that there have been links between ETA and South American terrorists FARC.
Morocco Wants Its Cities Back
The Moroccan prime minister has recently appealed to Spain to open dialogue about ending the Spanish occupation of the cities of Melilla and Ceuta on the Moroccan mainland and the possession of several small islands off its coast. There is as much chance of that happening as there is of Britain returning Gibraltar to Spain!
Life is Good in Spain
A survey by carried out by a British company shows that 90% of British residents in Spain are happy to be living here. The numbers moving here increased by 11,500 in 2009, and a government report states that property sales went up by 19% in the first part of this year compared to the same period in 2009.

Not Without a Helmet
Travelling on the roads by bike, trike, scooter, motor bike or quad bike without a helmet will be penalised in Spain when the new traffic law comes into force at the end of this month. Officers of the Guardia Civil will be empowered to immobilise or confiscate the offender's vehicle.
El Salón del Automóvil Ecológico de Madrid
The ecological motor show takes place in Madrid this week at the Ifema centre from May 20 to 23. Over 100 vehicles, of which 25% have electric motors, from 34 manufacturers will be displayed.
Astronomy Summer School in Granada
This year, an astronomy summer school will be organised from July 4-11 at Granada University. The idea of the event is to bring together advanced students of the science from all over the world, to promote teaching and further research of the subject.

The Málagueño actor and director, Antonio Banderas, will begin making a new film in Málaga next spring. The film will be entitled "Solo", and will be made in English.
New Permanent Collection at CAC
A new permanent collection entitled "Apocalipsis" is currently on show at the Centre of Contemporary Art, Málaga. The theme of the show is a reflection of society through history.
One Day Less of Feria
The annual August feria in Málaga will be one day shorter this year. It will end on the Saturday without the usual fireworks display, due to the crisis and austerity measures. An excuse that will be used for many different things, we are certain!

Los Castillos de Al Andalus
An exhibition about the castles of Al Andalus, the area of Spain ruled by the Moors for seven hundred years, is currently taking place in the exhibition centre of Benalmádena. The show features models of castles, reproductions of works of art, historical artefacts and cultural items of the period. It can be seen until June 13.
Charity Gala in Iznajar
A fundraising gala of music will take place in Iznajar on May 22, to raise money for two local children requiring treatment for their infirmities. The event will feature jazz, flamenco and classical music performances.
Jazz Week in Antequera
La IV Semana de Jazz de Antequera takes place this week, starting May 18.
Ornithological Route on El Hacho
A signposted ornithological route has been set up on El Hacho, near Álora. The route, entitled "Mira quien Vuela", has been organised by the Rural Development Group of the Gaudalhorce valley to show the importance of the area to temporary and resident birds.

The Monaco Grand Prix finished with a 1-2 for Red Bull in the hands of Webber and Vettel. Fernando Alonso fought his way through the field from last place to finish a creditable sixth. The next race is in Istanbul, May 28-30, 2.00 pm start, Spanish time.
Tennis
Rafa Nadal won the Madrid Masters 1000 tournament at the weekend, beating Roger Federer 6-4, 7-6, his third title this year.
Football
In a nailbiting finish to the season, Málaga managed a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid at the Rosaleda on Sunday, to maintain its place in La Liga, finishing in 17th place, one point above the relegation zone. Barcelona won the championship, as expected, beating Valladolid 4-0.

El jefe de la policía española ha ido a Venezuela para participar en la lucha contra el terrorismo en los dos países. Al parecer, se ha comprobado que ha habido vínculos entre ETA y los terroristas de América del Sur de las FARC.
Marruecos quiere que se vuelve sus ciudades
El primer ministro marroquí ha pedido recientemente a España para abrir el diálogo sobre acabar con la ocupación de las ciudades de Melilla y Ceuta de Marruecos y la posesión de varias pequeñas islas frente a sus costas. Hay tantas posibilidades de que eso ocurra, ya que es de Gran Bretaña devolver Gibraltar a España!
La vida es buena en España
Una encuesta realizada por una empresa británica muestra que el 90% de los residentes británicos en España están contentos de vivir aquí. Los números de inmigrantes aumentaron en 11.500 aquí en 2009, y un informe del gobierno indica que las ventas de propiedades subieron un 19% en la primera parte de este año en comparación con el mismo período en 2009.
No sin casco
Viajar por los carreteras en bicicleta, triciclo, scooter, moto o quad sin casco será penalizado en España, cuando la nueva ley de tráfico entre en vigor a finales de este mes. Oficiales de la Guardia Civil estará facultado para inmovilizar o confiscar el vehículo del infractor.

Gala de Caridad en Iznajar
Una gala de recaudación de fondos de la música se llevará a cabo en Iznajar el 22 de mayo, para recaudar fondos para dos niños de la localidad que requieren tratamiento para sus enfermedades. El evento contará con jazz, flamenco y música clásica.

Ruta Ornitológica de El Hacho
Una ruta ornitológica señalizada se ha creado en El Hacho, cerca de Álora. La ruta, titulado "Mira Quien Vuela", ha sido organizado por el Grupo de Desarrollo Rural del valle Gaudalhorce para mostrar la importancia del área para las aves residentes y temporales.
