Head of Supreme Court Resigns

The President of the Spanish Supreme Court and the General Council for Judicial Power, CGPJ, Carlos Dívar, resigned today. He finally went after losing the confidence of his colleagues following newspaper revelations about his many long weekends spent in four star hotels in Marbella and elsewhere at public expense. He insisted that he had done nothing wrong but there has been a huge outcry from the public that his behaviour, if not illegal, was certainly immoral.

Picasso Sells for 10.6 Million€

The 1949 Picasso oil painting, "Seated Woman" has been auctioned at Christies in London for 10.6 million euros (8.5 million pounds), far above the expected price.

New RENFE Timetables

The summer train timetables have been issued by RENFE. In this area, there are changes to the Ronda train times, and also links with El Chorro.

New Low-cost Routes

The low-cost airline, Volotea, has begun schedules flights between Málaga and Oviedo. These are in addition to its services to Zaragoza, Venice and Bordeaux.

El Cartel Europeo 1888-1938

An exhibition of European street advertising posters from 1888 to 1938 will take place at the Museo Picasso Málaga until 16 September. The 174 posters include works by Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec and Man Ray, among others.

El Cine de Verano

The annual summer program of film screenings in Málaga starts 25 June, until 9 August, with 23 films on show at various locations in the city, including the three main beaches, la Malagueta, Misericordia, and El Palo, and at el Museo Thyssen, la Plaza de Toros, and  Muelle 1 (the port development).

Feria de Cocina Málagueña

A fair which promotes local wines, food products and cooking will take place in la Plaza de Toros, Málaga 21-23 June.

The Human Body Exhibition

An exhibition of "plastinated" human bodies in various poses is currently taking place in el Palacio de Congresos de Marbella.

Starlite Festival

Local firms are currently working at full speed to convert a disused quarry near Marbella to an arena which will accomodate the Starlite Festival, which will take place from 14 July to 14 August. Stars such as Julio Iglesias and Hugh Laurie will be appearing.

VII Día de la Cereza

The seventh edition of the annual Día de la Cereza (cherry) takes place in Alfarnate, Saturday 23 June, with tastings, sales of local products etc.

Olympics

Rafa Nadal will be the flag bearer for Spain at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London on 27 July. The choice has raised some controversy, as the rules require the flag bearer to have more Olympic honours than others that could have been chosen.

Formula 1

The European GP takes place this weekend 22-24 June around the streets of Valencia, race starts at 14.00.

Football

The youth team of Málaga CF has reached the final of la Copa del Rey, beating Barcelona 3-0 and 2-2 over the two legs of the semi-final.  The team will meet Espanyol in the final on Sunday at Burriana, Castellón. The pre-season program for the senior team will end with a match against Everton at la Rosaleda for the Costa del Sol Cup,11 August.

Jefe de la Corte Suprema dimite

El Presidente del Tribunal Supremo español y del Consejo General del Poder Judicial, CGPJ, Carlos Dívar, dimitió hoy. Finalmente, se fue tras perder la confianza de sus colegas tras las revelaciones de los periódicos sobre sus muchos fines de semana pasados en hoteles de cuatro estrellas en Marbella y en otros lugares con fondos públicos. Insistió en que no había hecho nada mal, pero ha habido una gran protesta de la opinión pública de que su comportamiento, si no es ilegal, sin duda era inmoral.

Picasso vende por 10,6 millones de €

Una pintura de Picasso de 1949 "Mujer sentada", ha sido subastada en Christies en Londres, para 10,6 millones de euros (8,5 millones de libras), muy por encima del precio esperado.

Nueva Horarios de RENFE

Los horarios de verano se han emitido por RENFE. En esta zona, se producen cambios en los horarios de los trenes de Ronda, así como los vínculos con El Chorro.

Nuevas rutas de bajo coste

La aerolínea de bajo costo, Volotea, ha comenzado vuelos regulares entre Málaga y Oviedo. Estos son, además de sus servicios a Zaragoza, Venecia y Burdeos.

Una exposición de carteles publicitarios de la calle de Europa desde 1888 a 1938 se llevará a cabo en el Museo Picasso Málaga hasta el 16 de septiembre. Los 174 carteles incluyen obras de Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec y Man Ray, entre otros.
