It is a good sized, very Spanish town with a lively and interesting market on Fridays. The local golden beaches of Torre de la Horadada are a two minute drive away and stretch five kilometres along the coast with beautiful calm waters and plenty choice of water sports. These beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag Award which signifies the top condition of the beach and the waters.Pilar is located centrally between Alicante and Murcia and has seen many battles down the ages for supremacy. It has some lovely historical buildings including a watch tower situated in the beach area of Torre de la Horadada which was built in the 15th century. The locals are very proud of their history here. The lovely church in the town plaza “Nuestra Senora del Pilar' (Our lady of Pilar) replaced an older one but the original Bell Tower remains and there are many religious artefacts and beautiful religious paintings by local artists. Pilar, like other Spanish towns, has many fiestas and festivals throughout the year, the month of October is a continuous celebration of the Virgin Mary and the highlight is the floral tributes on 11th October. The sports centre in Pilar is fantastic, here you can take advantage of the Olympic size swimming pool, tennis and paddle courts and an Excellent Gym Sports Area Fitness Club.
