Álora
An exhibition of the history and images of Malaga 1931 - 1936 is on display at the Casa de Cultura from 12 - 22 September. 
 
The exhibition is open Monday to Friday 10.00 am to 2.00 pm and 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm.
 
Ardales
 
Work has begun on the town’s new indoor swimming pool.  The pool is the first stage of the new Haza de la Morena sports complex which will also include a football pitch, a Pelota court and sports pavilion. The first stone was laid by the Mayor of the town and President of the Provincial Government, Salvador Pendón. 
 
Alhaurín el Grande
 
The Ayuntamiento has approved the enlargement of two public colleges due to the increase in the population of the town.  The construction work will take place over the next two years.
 
European Day Without Cars
 
Since 1999 the city of Malaga has celebrated the “European Day without my car”, and this year it will take place on September 18.  There will be a series of activities dedicated to bring awareness of the need of the sustainable mobility of the city.  Trips on the EMT buses will be free and Paseo del Parque will be completely free of motor traffic. 
 
Sustainable Mobility
 
Malaga is participating in a meeting in Italy, involving other countries of the Mediterranean, to discuss a project on sustainable transport and mobility. Javier Berlanga from the Ayuntamiento of Malaga has met with the president of the region of Lazio (Italy) with the purpose of co-ordinating the new project among Mediterranean countries. 
 
At the meeting, which involves Spain (Malaga), Italy (Rome), Greece (Athens) and Morocco (Tetuán), the delegates will be discussing the development of agreements and criteria regarding sustainable transportation according to the commitments of Aalborg, the European technicians of the programme have positive initiatives that have been put in motion in the EMT of Malaga. 
 
King of Spain and Prime Minister in New York for United Nations General Assembly
 
King Juan Carlos and the Prime Minister were in New York this week to attend the opening sessions of the 60th General Assembly of the United Nations. The King headed the Spanish delegation and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero attended an official reception by George W Bush.  It was at the reception that the President of the United States thanked Spain for there help and aid following hurricane Katrina.
 
At the UN General Assembly, King Juan Carlos spoke in support of the Spanish government's foreign policy, additionally during his speech he also spoke of his support for the Alliance of Civilisations idea of the Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. The King said that it was necessary to renovate and strengthen the United Nations, given that it was the 'most powerful multilateral instrument' for the defence of security.  The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to make a harsh attack against hunger and poverty.
 
King and Queen Open Barcelona's Torre Agbar
 
King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía inaugurated the Torre Agbar today, which, at 142 metres, is Barcelona's third tallest building. The new tower, which is the new headquarters for the Aguas de Barcelona (Agbar) water company, was designed by French architect, Jean Nouvel, in collaboration with the b720 architecture agency.

The tower, which resembles half a cucumber, is covered in a fine layer of red, blue and orange aluminium tiles is illuminated at night.

Spanish Film Festival
 
The San Sebastian Film Festival, the oldest and most prestigious in the Spanish-speaking world has begun and runs from Thursday 15 September until Saturday 24 September.  For its 53rd edition there will be a strong focus on European movies."Tideland," directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Jennifer Tilly and Jeff Bridges, is among the movies being shown at festival and includes Michael Winterbottom's "A Cock and Bull Story," starring Kelly Macdonald and Jeremy Northam; Andreas Dresen's "Summer in Berlin"; and Anne Fontaine's "Entre ses mains." The festival has tried to create a balanced selection of interesting films responding to a great variety of tastes.
 
Galactica Inventions Fair
 
The 12th Galatica Inventor’s Fair takes place this week from 15 - 18 September in the town of Vilanova i la Geltru, near Barcelona.  Inventors come from all over the world to exhibit their inventions, which, this year, include an edible teaspoon, soccer coaching device and a shrimp peeler.
 
Aircraft Safety
 
The Spanish Government is to increase aircraft inspections on foreign airlines operating from Spanish airports. The Minister of Development, Magdalena Álvarez, announced last week that the number of controls would be increased from the 300 scheduled for this year to 3,300 in 2007. The present staff of 143 inspectors will be increased by 33%.  This action is in response to the recent aircraft accidents in other countries.
 
Volkswagen Denies Plans to Sell Seat
 
Volkswagen today denied reports that it was planning to sell off its Spanish manufacturer, Seat.  Reports in Germany said that Seat had been given until the middle of next year to substantially raise sales and earnings and increase cash flow enough to justify further investment.  According to Spiegel magazine claimed VW was considering using the Seat factory in Martorell, Barcelona, to build cars of other brands, and that the Spanish car maker could be offloaded to a Chinese manufacturer.

Malaga suffered a home defeat in front of a near capacity crowd last weekend.  Malaga's next game is away to Athletic Bilbao this Sunday at their San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, kick off is at 5.00 pm and then thney are home to Alavés on Wednesday 21 September with the kick off at 9.00 pm.
 
Tour of Spain
 
Roberto Heras retained the overall lead after stage 19 of the Tour of Spain, won by German Heinrich Haussler, and is 48 hours away from a record-breaking fourth title.  On the 142.9km stage from San Martin de Valdeiglesias to Alcobendas, Heras finished securely in the main bunch, 15 minutes 25 seconds down on Haussler.
 
Basket Ball
 
Spain won an easy victory against Serbia in the début of the Eurobasket.  The Spanish basketball team won 89 - 70 in its first game of the European Championship of basketball which began Friday in Novi Sad, Serbia.
