Obviously the future is in building smart communities, and it is surprising just how slowly this whole idea seems to be unpacking, but the first step to get there is to commit to this new concept and Benalmádena city council seems to have done that.
Geographically speaking Benalmádena is very well situated in the centre of the Costa del Sol - one of the main tourist destinations in the world - and presents itself as a mountainous coastal destination, traversed by streams and torrents. Benalmádena is bordered by Torremolinos to the north-east; Alhaurín de la Torre to the north; Mijas and Fuengirola to the west; and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The municipality of Benalmádena, in addition, is divided into 3 urban nuclei clearly differentiated: Benalmádena Pueblo, Benalmádena Costa and Arroyo de la Miel, each of which corresponds to a district of the city. It is, therefore, a complex environment with a series of common characteristics but not always homogeneous.
Of course the whole town is still a work in progress, as it should be, and there are aspects of it that need more work than others - like, for instance, there are hardly enough bicycle lanes (only 3.5 km); the pedestrian network presents numerous problems of continuity throughout the urban nucleus (some due to the numerous obstacles on the roads, other to the illegal occupation by drivers and citizens in general, but mostly caused by the poor condition of the side-walks); or the great traffic congestion problems in two specific points: at the entrance to the core of Arroyo de la Miel (exit 222), mainly during the peak hours and in the Avenida de Antonio Machado (a situation that worsens considerably in the summer, when the population not only in Benalmádena doubles, but in all municipalities
of the Costa del Sol).
