Fuengirola is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, Andalusia. It is a major tourist resort, with more than 8 km of beaches and home to a medieval Moorish fortress. It has become one of the municipalities where more nationalities of the world coexist. However, the vast majority of these residents from other countries, are unaware of the local language, customs and regulations. With the aim of providing an adequate service to their needs, in 1997, the local government of the City Council decided to launch a free service, in several languages, of assistance to foreigners residing in Fuengirola. As an example, you can obtain general information about the procedures to register with the National Police Station, obtain the Residence Card as a family member, driving licenses, vehicles, communities of owners, schools, discount cards for pensioners, cards of Social Security, etc.

 

Fuengirola has been awarded the "Escoba de Platino" (the platinum broom), the highest award that a municipality can receive in terms of cleanliness. Its visitors always remark and point out the state of the streets. All this is possible thanks to the growing citizen collaboration and the important economic and human effort made by the City Council. There are workers in the streets 24 hours a day and the technological means employed are among the most modern in the country. The vast majority of garbage containers are already buried through ecological islands as well as the tanks for the separation of waste. Fuengirola was one of the first Spanish towns to bet on this environmental advance.

 

The City Council is working to turn Fuengirola into a "Child Friendly City", a distinction that UNICEF gives to the towns and cities that work for and with children. The fundamental pillars of the Child Friendly Cities program are: the design of effective public policies based on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the promotion of child and adolescent participation and the promotion of alliances among all the actors related to the childhood at the municipal level. The City Council, with the support of the Department of Social Services, is carrying out actions aimed at meeting the necessary requirements to ensure the solid existence of the pillars mentioned above and in recent years various initiatives have been launched in Fuengirola to improve the quality of life of our children, promote their autonomy and respond to their demands and needs, also promoting their participation in municipal life.
