Skillful Pilots Navigate Mallorca Flight Through Severe Thunderstorm
An Austrian Airlines flight from Palma de Mallorca to Vienna faced a terrifying ordeal when it encountered a severe thunderstorm near Hartberg, Austria. The Airbus A320, battered by heavy hail, suffered substantial damage but managed to land safely at Vienna Schwechat Airport, thanks to the expert handling by the pilots.
The aircraft was flying at approximately 6,000 meters when the crew unexpectedly entered a thunderstorm that was not detected by their weather radar. The incident highlighted the unpredictable nature of weather systems and the critical role of pilot expertise.
Upon arrival in Vienna, it became evident how serious the situation had been. The nose, fuselage, and front cabin windows of the aircraft bore the brunt of the hailstorm. Austrian Airlines released a statement confirming the details: "Flight OS434 from Palma de Mallorca to Vienna encountered a thunderstorm cell on approach, which was not visible on the weather radar.
